Exploring Hokkaido

Ten days on the road to explore the coastline of the northernmost island of Japan

Following two hectic weeks exploring Tokyo, Nagoya, and Himeji, we craved an escape from the urban bustle. Our choice? The captivating island of Hokkaido, a first-time destination for me despite my many trips to Japan. I was eager to witness firsthand the breathtaking natural beauty Hokkaido famously guards.

A journey across nature, local tradition and history. Our final goal was to reach the northernmost point of Japan, Cape Soya but also to explore the incredible, and sometimes harsh Japanese coastline.

The Toyosokai Kompira Shrine and its red Torii were standing still, agains the storm that was approching fast…

Over ten days, we embarked on an epic Hokkaido journey, covering more than two thousand kilometers by car and on foot, venturing down countless roads and hiking countless trails...

…that led us to discover beautiful places…

…and places with a tragic history, like Nosappu Cape. The gate placed here is resembling a bridge between Hokkaido and the four Japanese Islands close by, that right after WWII were occupied by Soviets and never returned.

“God built lighthouses to see people through storms. Then he built storms to remind people to find lighthouses.”

Our ten days adventure was over but I can’t wait to be back in Hokkaido, but next time will be in winter.
